Inter Miami are one of Major League Soccer’s newest expansion franchises after joining the league in 2020. England legend David Beckham is also amongst the team’s group of owners.

Inter Miami club name

Officially, the franchise is named Club Internacional de Futbol Miami but is more commonly called Inter Miami. The team also have two nicknames in the Herons and Vice City. The club adopted the Herons as a nickname from the two Great White Heron birds used on the crest.

Herons are common in South Florida and across the Miami area, so were a natural fit for the team’s logo. While Inter Miami also adopted the Vice City tag first given to the city of Miami in the 1980s. It is now nomenclature for the fast-paced and high-class nature of the region.

Beckham first signalled his intent to start an MLS team in 2007 when the Manchester United icon agreed to join LA Galaxy from Real Madrid. But issues finding the site to build the club’s stadium delayed their entry. It was not before January 2018 that MLS officially sanctioned it.

MLS commissioner Don Garber confirmed in 2018 that Inter Miami would join the league in the 2020 season. It marked the long-fought end to Beckham’s dream he put into motion 11 years earlier. He secured a discounted $25m option to start an MLS team to join LA Galaxy.

Inter Miami stadium

The addition of Miami-based brothers Jorge and Jose Mas helped secure Inter Miami’s entry to MLS for 2020. Their pitch to adopt a temporary home stadium in 2020 before moving into the club’s own facilities in 2021 helped placate Garber and MLS’ hesitancy to grant an entry.

Inter Miami secured the venue of Lockhart Stadium for their temporary home after the Fort Lauderdale Strikers confirmed their departure. Work began in 2019 on the demolition of the site and the creation of a new, 19,100-capacity venue. The club also built a training complex.

Plans remain in place to move from the stadium once Inter Miami’s permanent home, Miami Freedom Park, is built. But their 25,000-capacity venue and 58-acre site is not expected to be ready until 2025. In the meantime, Inter Miami also sold the stadium naming rights in 2024.

Inter Miami training ground

Inter Miami built their 50,000-square-foot Florida Blue Training Center adjacent to Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The venue is home to all of Inter Miami’s club operations, from their first-team to the academy. It boasts six natural grass fields and one artificial turf pitch.

Current league

Inter Miami joined Major League Soccer in the 2020 season but reached the play-offs for the first time in 2022. The Herons almost qualified for the play-offs during the club’s first season in 2020, as well. But Nashville SC beat Vice City in the play-in round to end their dream start.

Inter Miami appointed Javier Mascherano as the club’s latest head coach in November 2024. The former Barcelona and Argentina star replaced Tata Martino in charge at Chase Stadium.
