Inter Miami fell victim to one of the biggest shocks in MLS play-off history after being eliminated by Atlanta United.

The Supporters’ Shield champions and MLS Cup favorites were knocked out of the post-season by the lowest-seeded side in the Eastern Conference bracket as Atlanta bested Inter Miami 3-2 at Chase Stadium.

With Sergio Busquets’ absence for Inter Miami noted as a potential reason why the Florida franchise lost to Atlanta, the Herons will feel like their year has come to a disappointing end after so much hype heading into the play-offs.

And Atlanta had one final trick up their sleeve on social media after beating Inter Miami.

Atlanta post humorous dig at Inter Miami after historic win

Taking to Twitter, Atlanta couldn’t help but post one more dig aimed at Inter Miami after last night’s win, with the Five Stripes riding high after their historic result.

With Inter Miami joining the Columbus Crew in being eliminated early on in the MLS play-offs, this post-season has quickly become one of the hardest to predict in quite some time.

Yet for the Herons themselves, they will be looking at themselves in the mirror and questioning what went wrong having assembled arguably the greatest team ever seen in MLS with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Busquets.

Indeed, this off-season will be a big one for Inter Miami, and some tough decisions could have to be made if the Florida franchise are to regroup and go again better than ever next season in MLS.

Inter Miami need to take valuable lessons from early play-off elimination

Everyone in MLS is currently taking shots at Inter Miami for their early play-off elimination, with the Herons quickly becoming the butt of many jokes in the league having crashed out in the post-season.

Yet this moment could prove to be the making of Inter Miami for years to come, with lessons learned during these low points where the Herons will want to go again next season and be better than ever.

This winter will be as big as last year’s for Inter Miami, and the Florida franchise will be back with a vengeance next season in what could be their defining year in MLS.
