Sergio Aguero has detailed how he believed Lionel Messi was going to return to FC Barcelona before the forward’s move to Inter Miami.

The 36-year-old attacker left the La Liga giants in 2021 after financial problems at Barcelona meant Messi was unable to sign a new contract with the club.

The Argentine that summer then moved to PSG, yet within two years Messi was on the move again, this time to Inter Miami as MLS’ new superstar signing and catalyst for a potential soccer revolution in America.

Yet speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Aguero has now detailed how he through Messi was going to return to Barcelona, with the former striker saying he wouldn’t take the no. 10 shirt at the club because of who it originally belonged to.

Aguero said: “As soon as Leo left, the club offered me the no. 10 shirt, I told them no. Not because I didn’t want to use it, I was no. 10 for all my clubs.

“But I believed that Messi was going to return. I told them it’s someone else’s shirt. ‘You’re the only one who can use it, you or Ansu,’ they told me. I told them to give it to Ansu Fati, for me the no. 10 belongs to Leo, if he’s not there, nobody should use it.”

As much as we all want Messi to remain at Inter Miami for the remainder of his career, one last dance with Barcelona would be the stuff of dreams for soccer fans.

Messi is the biggest player in the club’s history and a massive reason behind their success in the last 20 years, with the Argentine building his legacy at Barcelona.

And after Aguero’s comments, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Messi was to one day return to Catalonia with Barcelona for one last spell before retiring for good from the sport.
