Inter Miami came out 2-0 victors against FC Cincinnati last night in what was to be a hugely significant match for the Herons.

The Florida franchise gained big ground in the race for the Supporters Shield whilst also confirmed their spot in this post-season’s MLS play-offs, with Tata Martino announcing that Lionel Messi is close to returning to action.

With Inter Miami also enacting revenge over Cincinnati after the record-breaking 6-1 loss earlier this summer, it was a great night for the Herons, though one that was somewhat clouded by Tomas Aviles again being sent off for a reckless challenge.

And manager Martino has now shared what he thought about the incident.

Maritnio says Aviles is ‘very sorry’ after rash sending off

Speaking to the press after the win, Martino revealed that the Argentine defender was apologetic about the tackle, with the Inter Miami coach also choosing not to give Aviles the infamous hairdryer treatment after the game.

Martino said when asked about the incident and how he went about talking to Aviles: “Talking to him about it, he is very very sorry about what happened.

“He is aware that he made a mistake that could have cost us the game, but I continue to insist with all the young boys, especially those who have so many qualities, that he has to talk to the squad and make him see that it is good to have a temperament, it speaks very well of him and what he offers the team because of that temperament and that aggressiveness.

“But there is a point where he has to discern between where and when he is about to make a mistake. I’m not here to punish him, I’m here to help him grow in the best way I can, and he will become a player if he corrects himself, his potential is enormous.”

Aviles error vs Cincinnati could cause problems for Inter Miami

Aviles is a defender who has a lot to learn if he’s to unleash his full potential, with the 20-year-old showing multiple glimpses of quality throughout the season with Inter Miami.

Yet with a second red card this summer, Aviles’ error against Cincinnati could cause problems for Inter Miami going forward over the center-back’s mentality and ability to not make mistakes.

Whilst Inter Miami got away big time last night against their Supporters’ Shield rivals, there’s no telling how lucky the Herons will be in next instance that Aviles is sent off, a problem the Argentine needs to work on.
