Inter Miami defender Franco Negri has addressed one issue that has come up in recent weeks that even Lionel Messi can’t help solve.

The Herons have been in fantastic form in recent weeks with Inter Miami securing their fifth straight MLS win this weekend against CF Montreal, with the Florida giants coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

With Matias Rojas this time the hero on the night, Inter Miami showed that they have more than just Messi to win games, with Luis Suarez and Benjamin Cremaschi also scoring for Tata Martino’s side.

Yet the result once again highlighted a major issue that Inter Miami currently have.

Negri says Inter Miami’s defense needs to be as good as the attack

Speaking to ESPN, Negri admitted that Inter Miami’s defense have been saved this season by how efficient the attack has been, with the Herons going 1-0 down in every single one of their last five fixtures despite the winning run.

With just two clean sheets all season, keeping goals out has become a major problem for Inter Miami, who are lucky enough to have the best firepower ever assembled in a single MLS squad.

However, if the Herons are to challenge for MLS Cup, they will need to sort out their issues at the back, with Inter Miami’s luck likely to run out soon if they keep conceding goals as frequently as they have been.

Negri said: “It gives us tranquility to count with players like that on the attack. But we also have to have the responsibility to be better at the back, luckily we have found that amount of goals and won.”

Inter Miami’s attack can’t solve defensive issues this season

One of the most famous lines in soccer is that attacks win you games, but defenses win you titles, and the saying could not be even more relevant to Inter Miami in this current moment in time.

The Herons have ridden their luck quite a bit in recent weeks with five wins on the bounce, with Messi and Suarez in sensational goalscoring form with Rojas now chipping in.

Yet there will come a time where problems at the back will become a bigger issue for Inter Miami, and the Herons need to address this problem in the summer when the window opens for business.
