Inter Miami enjoyed one of their best MLS results of the season with a 2-0 win against Supporters’ Shield rivals FC Cincinnati.

The win confirmed Inter Miami’s place in the play-offs with manager Tata Martino also revealing after the game that Lionel Messi is close to returning at last from injury, with the Argentine once again missing last night’s fixture.

With Luis Suarez in top goalscoring form, though, Inter Miami had enough needed to squeak past Cincinnati, a result made even better given the fact that the Herons spent most of the game with ten men due to Tomas Aviles being sent off.

And MLS legend Sacha Kljestan was critical of the young defender.

Aviles slammed for unnecessary Inter Miami red card vs Cincinnati

Speaking on MLS Wrap-Up, the former USA international was not impressed with what he saw from Aviles against Cincinnati, with the defender lunging in unprovoked to earn his marching orders.

With Aviles being sent off earlier this summer against the Philadelphia Union, the 20-year-old defender has some lessons to learn when it comes to how to handle his temperament and rashness, something Martino brought up post-game.

And for Kljestan, the pundit was not impressed with what he saw from Aviles, who got away with one with Inter Miami keeping a clean sheet against Cincinnati despite some good chances from the MLS giants.

Kljestan said when asked about Aviles’ sending off against Cincinnati: “Red card. There’s no need for him to go to ground there. He’s been absolutely stomped on there, and with Aviles already on a yellow, if that wasn’t a red it would have been a second yellow anyway, there’s no need.”

Aviles needs to learn from defensive mistakes

Aviles is very much at the start of his career as a top professional, with the Argentine youth international still on course to have a good life in soccer and one that could see the defender take his talents to Europe.

However, the amount of mistakes the defender has now made this year in regards to sending offs and tackles at the wrong place and the wrong time is becoming a worrying development for Inter Miami.

And whilst Aviles has time to sort out these issues, the center-back needs to get on top of them now, with the defender at the ideal stage of his career to learn from his mistakes and to improve as a player.
