One of the biggest clouds hanging over Inter Miami surrounds the future of their and the MLS superstar Lionel Messi.

New manager Javier Mascherano could prove vital in keeping Messi in Miami, perhaps the fact that Luis Suarez has signed a new contract will also help.

Messi was named the MLS MVP in 2024 showing he still possesses all of his powers despite now being 37.

The 2025 season could be a big one for the Argentine. Messi is chasing several records this campaign and will be hoping to lead Inter Miami to MLS Cup success.

Messi’s contract details

While it remains unknown whether Messi will sign a new deal with Inter Miami the early signs are positive according to DSports Radio who have said: “[Messi] is looking forward to staying in Miami.”

The Argentine’s current contract is set to end in December but it appears that the Herons are going to offer Messi a contract extension until December 2026.

Inter Miami will need to make some new additions to the squad to keep the side in the hunt for trophies this year, something that will be crucial to Messi’s future.

The Herons agreed on a deal to sign Telasco Segovia from Casa Pia. The midfielder cost $2.5m and he looks set to be the perfect Diego Gomez replacement.

It will take more than new signings to convince the record-holding Ballon d’Or winner to stay with the club though.

Messi scored 20 goals in the MLS last season and finished as the club’s joint top-scorer with Suarez.

Neymar’s potential arrival could convince Messi

Inter Miami have been linked with Neymar for some time, and their hopes of signing the star were handed a major boost recently.

Neymar recently spoke out about his desire to play with Messi and Suarez again, something that could be achievable under Javier Mascherano.

The strike force of Messi, Suarez and Neymar, often referred to as MSN scared defenses no end during their time at Barcelona.

In the 409 games that MSN has played together, they have scored 344 goals and 157 assists.

While it remains unseen if Neymar will join the Herons the potential could be enough to tempt Messi to a new deal – Inter Miami fans will certainly hope so.
