Lionel Messi says playing in the 2026 World Cup isn’t outside the realm of possibility.

In the Disney+ documentary, Champions, a year later, the Argentine spoke about his focus on the 2024 Copa América and his chances of playing in the 2026 World Cup.

“Today the only thing I think about is getting to the Copa America well and being able to compete in it, fighting it again like we always did, trying to be champions,” the forward said.

Messi continued: “It seemed that after the World Cup I was retiring and quite the opposite. Now I want to be there more than ever. [But] I’m not thinking about the World Cup and I’m not saying 100 percent that I won’t be there because anything can happen.”

The former Barcelona captain led Argentina to its third World Cup title in country history, defeating France in an exhilarating final.

As evident by his crafty play in Major League Soccer, Messi is – without a doubt, still good enough to play at a top level. It remains to be seen if he’ll participate in the 2026 World Cup. But, if he keeps up his current form, it wouldn’t be hard to seen him suit up for La Albiceleste when the time comes.

Inter Miami and Messi will have a busy 2024.

Not only will the Argentine and Miami play in multiple domestic and international competitions in 2024, but they’ll also be looking to achieve more success.

As Messi gets older, his window to add more trophies to his illustrious career will start to close.

The 36-year-old will have the chance to win more silverware for Argentina in the summer, as well as challenge for MLS Cup should Inter Miami make the playoffs.

Although he’s up there in age, the Argentine still has enough quality to make an impact. This bodes well for both Miami and Argentina next season.
