Inter Miami midfielder David Ruiz reverses his decision to play for the United States and commits to representing the Honduran national team.

This change of heart comes days after several reports stated that the midfielder was set to file a one-time switch to play for the US.

In a statement to Deporte Total USA, Ruiz spoke about his excitement of committing his international future to Honduras: “I just wanted to let you know that I am with the Honduras national team and that there are great things to come.”

Ruiz has represented Honduras all through his youth, earning a call-up to the senior team in August of this year. The teen joined Inter Miami’s academy in 2021 before working his way up to the first team.

He made his debut on May 31st, in a 1-0 loss at home against the New York Red Bulls.

David Ruiz has made his name known over the course of 2023.

At just 19 years old, Ruiz was a key part of Inter Miami’s run to the Leagues Cup final, where they would eventually win their first title in club history.

With his star rising, it’s natural that he would want to try his luck at getting into the United States midfield.

However, the Stars and Stripes have a midfield that’s difficult to break into. Though Ruiz is a talented player, it would’ve taken time and development for him to really get an opportunity. Luckily, Honduras is the right country for Ruiz to grow his game.

Not only will he be able to fight for a starting spot, but the likelihood of making a World Cup roster with Honduras is exceptionally high.

Ultimately, Ruiz made a decision that was best for his career. It elevated his potential prospects of playing in a major tournament and also gave him assurance about his international future.
