Tata Martino has spoken out about what it’s like to coach Lionel Messi.
Speaking to reporters via GOAL.com before Miami’s November 10th match against NYCFC, the 60-year-old reflected on the 2023 season and revealed what it’s like to manage Messi: “We have enjoyed these five months. It’s been like a roller coaster, between so many games and tournaments. We were able to enjoy a championship. For me, it’s always a pleasure to coach him.”
Though Miami would go on to lose the match, Martino’s sentiments are the culmination of Miami’s year. Before the summer transformation, the Herons were one of the worst teams in the league. When Martino was appointed on June 28th, their fortunes started to change.
Led by Messi, the men in pink fought their way to the Leagues Cup final, where they dispatched Eastern Conference rival Nashville SC 10 to 9 on penalties.
Despite the Leagues Cup title win, Miami would fail to make the post-season, much to the annoyance of several players.
With Inter Miami heading into its fifth season in Major League Soccer and the second season of Messi, expect the Herons to build a roster capable of winning more silverware.
Inter Miami and Messi’s ambitions in 2024

Messi has made it his plan to help Inter Miami win more trophies.
Speaking to the crowd at DRV PNK Stadium before ‘Noche d’Or,’ the Argentine reiterated his desire to bring more success to South Florida: “We are going to continue enjoying and winning titles. I hope you accompany us as you accompanied us all these months that I’ve been here.”
Miami is hungry to achieve even more.
The latter half of 2023 was disappointing, but if Messi’s words indicate anything, it’s that Inter Miami will be in the mix to potentially win MLS Cup in 2024.
