Inter Miami have been the best team in MLS this year by some distance, with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez the stars of the show.

The legendary attackers have worked wonders together again in Florida with Messi setting a new record seemingly very week with Suarez also doing what he can to set new benchmarks for Inter Miami in terms of goalscoring.

With the end of the season on the horizon, the race for the MLS MVP award is beginning to heat up, with Messi and Suarez two of the outstanding candidates to pick up the major honor if they can push Inter Miami to play-off glory having won the Supporters’ Shield.

Yet Taylor Twellman now thinks Inter Miami’s own success could be Messi and Suarez’s undoing in their bids for the MVP award.

Inter Miami’s squad depth has done more than Messi and Suarez this season

Speaking on Twellman’s Takes, the former MLS superstar suggested that whilst Messi and Suarez are rightly in the mix for the MVP award, Inter Miami’s squad have been the main reason why the Herons have been as good as they have been this season.

Inter Miami’s roster is rightly considered the deepest and best ever seen in MLS, with Tata Martino having an incredible amount of options to pick from having seen the squad transform in the last 12 months thanks to the arrival of Messi last year.

And for Twellman, the pundit hinted that Messi or Suarez being named MVP would go against what the award was created to represent, that being to honor the best player in MLS in regards to the performances for their team and their importance in the side.

Twellman said: “I love having a good debate, especially when it comes to MVP in MLS, and Suarez and Messi have their own cases, own arguments, strong ones, but when it’s all said and done, that is the most complete and deepest roster in MLS history, and I think that hurts their cases on some level.”

MVP award could easily go to another superstar in MLS

MLS has done a good job in recent years in regards to the MVP award in handing out the prestigious honor to the player who has actually done the best in the league, with recent winners including the likes of Lucho Acosta, Hany Mukhtar and Carles Gil.

And whilst big-name players such as Carlos Vela and David Villa have won the MVP award, these superstars were named after historic years with their clubs and were the main guys for their respective teams.

For all the quality Messi and Suarez bring Inter Miami, this year has shown that the Herons are more than just a single player, with the collective roster the reason the Florida franchise have been as good as they have been this season under Martino.
