Lionel Messi made history yet again yesterday as he helped Inter Miami win their first ever trophy with victory in the Leagues Cup final.
Tata Martino’s side drew 1-1, with Messi scoring yet another world-class goal, and won the subsequent penalty shootout to win the trophy.
Naturally, the immediate attention focused towards Messi, but he made sure the rest of the Miami squad got the credit they deserved.
The Argentine superstar became captain when he joined the club this summer, but he made sure to share the glory with DeAndre Yedlin, who was the skipper prior to Messi’s arrival.
During the celebrations, Messi gave Yedlin the captain’s armband, despite the USMNT star’s initial refusal to accept it, before lifting the trophy together in the main presentation.
History made
Messi and Miami have achieved something special by winning the Leagues Cup. The bottom club of the MLS have gone unbeaten since Messi’s arrival, and have won their first trophy against the odds, with the superstar attacker scoring in every single game.
Their attention will now turn to fixing their league form. Still bottom of the league, there is little chance that Miami can make the playoffs, but they will nevertheless aim to carry their form from the cup into MLS fixtures.

Messi has been a revelation both on the pitch and off it, and his moment with Yedlin sums up his greatness, as he refused to take all the credit for his team’s achievements, even if he was the biggest factor in Miami’s success.
The Argentine is now the most successful player of all time in terms of trophies, with the Leagues Cup his 44th triumph, and if there was still any doubts about him being the greatest to ever play the game before, there will certainly be less now.
