Lionel Messi could play in Argentina’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

In episode 19 of Fabrizio Romano’s The Debrief, Spanish journalist Guillem Balagué claims that the 36-year-old could play one last World Cup with Argentina: “Messi could have another World Cup in him, that’s what I think and some Messi family members wish/think.”

Messi recently led La Albiceleste to its third World Cup title in history last December. Throughout the tournament, the Argentine was crucial to his country’s inspirational run to the final.

Following the contest, after two years at Paris Saint Germain, the ex-Barcelona captain declared his intentions to play in Major League Soccer. He subsequently signed with Inter Miami, where he ended his first season with 17 G/A in all competitions.

The Herons will end the year with an exhibition friendly against NYCFC on Friday, November 10th.

By the time the 2026 World Cup rolls around, Messi will be 40 years old.

While his talent and footballing IQ won’t fade, physically it could be difficult for him.

Although Argentina has young players such as midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Rodrigo de Paul to do the running for Messi, the Rosario native could still struggle with the game’s physicality as he gets up there in age.

However, Messi is known to be a magician on the field. It’s likely that he’ll be able to play at a high level despite his years.

Conversely, on the commercial side, Messi playing in 2026’s tournament will be beneficial for Inter Miami and MLS.

The World Cup winner’s contract with Miami includes an option to extend through the 2026 season. Should Messi and the club agree to an extension, the midfielder will be the face of the sport in the United States while playing for an American team.

All in all, it remains to be seen if the Argentine will play in 2026’s edition of the tournament. If he does, it will be a fitting end to a marvelous international career.
