Lionel Messi could win yet another individual award.

The 36-year-old has been named a finalist for Major League Soccer Newcomer of the Year. The award, set to be presented during the MLS Cup Playoffs, is given annually to the best new player in the league.

Messi signed with Inter Miami in July. Since then, he’s carried the team to a Leagues Cup victory and a US Open Cup Final appearance.

Inter Miami ended its season with a 1-0 loss away at Charlotte FC on October 21st. The club will wind down the year with an off-season trip to China before shutting down and preparing for 2024.

There has been a large debate on social media about whether Messi deserves to win the award.

Despite leading Miami to its first title in club history with the Leagues Cup, when it came down to an actual game time during the MLS regular season, the Argentine only played in four matches. Compared to the other finalists, Eduard Löwen and Giorgos Giakoumakis, Messi has been on the field for significantly less time than the duo.

However, those favoring the 36-year-old winning the award see it differently.

It all boils down to impact off the field.

Messi has been the biggest newcomer the league has seen. The consensus is that the ex-Barcelona man is deserving of the award due to the legacy he’ll leave once he finishes playing with the Herons. The World Cup winner has pushed Inter Miami into the upper echelon of world football. Furthermore, the midfielder has brought eyes to a league that’s desperate to expand its reach.

Ultimately, both sides have a compelling argument. But if the league and its awards want to remain credible, it’s better off if Löwen or Giakoumakis win the accolade.

Messi will undoubtedly have the opportunity to win more individual awards next season.
