Houston Dynamo manager Ben Olsen has now claimed that he expects Lionel Messi to play for Inter Miami in today’s U.S. Open Cup final.
Messi is an injury doubt for the game, having missed the last few matches with injury, and manager Tata Martino has refused to confirm if his star player will feature.
The 36-year-old has been a game-changing signing for Miami, and he will be eager to play in the cup final to win his second trophy since his arrival in the summer.
Olsen has now claimed that he has prepared his side on the assumption that they will be facing the former Barcelona superstar today, and this is a daunting prospect for any team.
“We’re pretty sure he’ll play,’ Olsen stated. “We’ll prepare for them in that way.
“They’ve got some options if that isn’t the case. But we’ll prepare for their best lineup unless we hear something more concrete.'”
Could Messi be risked?
There has been recent talk that the U.S. Open Cup final may be Messi’s final game of 2023, as Inter Miami are unlikely to make the playoffs.
After an incredibly busy schedule since his move, the veteran may be rested until 2024 following the cup final in order to manage his fitness.

This may mean it is more likely he gets risked for the cup final. Messi can deliver success to Miami before resting anyway until the new year. Whilst this is not an ideal scenario, it is one that makes sense.
Today’s game is more important than any other Miami will likely face this season, and it is a huge occasion in which Messi should feature.
Even if he has to start on the bench, Messi should play today, as there will be no need for him to rush back after the final.
