Tata Martino gave a cheeky hint regarding Inter Miami’s tactics for next year.

Speaking to the media after Miami’s 2-1 loss vs. NYCFC, the Miami manager spoke candidly about a variety of topics, including a potential tactical switch for the 2024 season: “The team seems to be more solid with a line of five. This is something we will improve on over the off-season.”

Martino was appointed Miami manager on June 28th and quickly started changing the team’s shape.

Initially setting up the squad in a 4-3-3, the Argentine stuck with that formation throughout the summer, including during Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup triumph on August 19th.

However, as fatigue started to set in and injuries piled up, the 60-year-old would quietly shift Miami to a 3-5-2.

With 2024 on the horizon, Martino’s hint could be a big indicator of what formation Miami could play next year.

Martino deployed the 3-5-2 formation against NYCFC with moderate success.

The first half of the match saw Miami struggle to create consistent, clear-cut chances on goal. However, as the match progressed, Miami morphed into a 3-5-2, which saw the Herons play significantly better.

Miami’s only goal of the match would come through Robbie Robinson in the 81st minute after the Heron’s switch to a back three.

The men in pink looked much more active in the final third and were able to get solid looks on goal. Jordi Alba and Nicolas Stefanelli provided width on the wings, with the midfield duo of Tomas Avilés and Sergio Busquets circulating the ball well.

As Miami shifts focus to 2024, Martino says they’ll do their best to acquire players that can fit this formation: “We have to be precise. I’m conscious of the fact when you want to improve the team, you have to take risks. For what lies ahead, it’s evident we need to improve.”

With the team looking to win more silverware, getting the right personnel in will be important.
