Tata Martino had a relatively successful season at Inter Miami in 2023.

Martino replaced Phil Neville as Inter Miami’s coach on June 28th, following a poor start to the 2023 season.

The Argentine led the club to the Leagues Cup title, brought in three talented U22 players, and set the foundation for a good 2024.

Martino would experiment with a variety of different formations throughout 2023, including a 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2, and 3-5-2, all to varying success. The most used formation from the ex-Atlanta United manager was the 4-3-3, which he used during Miami’s League Cup trophy run.

The 60-year-old ended the year with a 45% win rate through 20 games.

If Martino can replicate the summer form that the Herons had, then Miami will be in a good position to win more silverware.

There were parts of the year when the Herons played fantastic football. It was free-flowing, structured, and high-intensity.

As the season progressed and the injuries started to pile up, Martino found it difficult to implement a new tactical ideology after a short time with the team.

The Miami manager even said as much after the team’s loss to the Chicago Fire on October 4th: “I’m satisfied with what we’ve done throughout the year. I always thought since the moment I took over the team that these six months were going to be to give it some shape, to get to know the players, and for the Club to have an excellent 2024.”

With next season approaching, Martino along with Lionel Messi will seek to add to the team’s trophy cabinet. If the 60-year-old can choose the right formation as well as tactics that will get the most out of his players, Miami should be able to challenge for MLS Cup.
