MLS side CF Montreal are reportedly close to signing Josef Martinez after the striker was released by Inter Miami last year.

The Venezuelan international was released by the Herons despite Martinez having one of the best goalscoring records in MLS, with the attacker breaking numerous accolades during his time in America.

With Inter Miami signing Luis Suarez this January, it’s understandable why Martinez was released by Tata Martino’s side, with the Uruguay international joining as a Designated Player from Gremio.

Yet according to the Athletic, Martinez is now closing in on his next MLS move, with the former Atlanta United star set to sign for Canadian franchise Montreal.

With Martinez forming quite a friendship with Lionel Messi both on and off the pitch, Inter Miami’s decision to release the former Torino star will remain an odd one for some supporters.

And with the attacker now heading north of the border to Canada, Montreal could soon unleash Martinez’s true form once again, a prospect that could terrorize MLS.

Whilst Martinez’s form has been off in MLS since picking up a knee injury for Atlanta, there’s no denying that the attacker is still one of the most dangerous forwards in the league when in top form.

And Montreal could be the club where the South American rediscovers his goalscoring touch, with Martinez in need of a restart in his career.

Indeed, the 30-year-old attacker should be in the prime form of his life, and heading to Canada could do just that for Martinez having left Inter Miami last year.
