Inter Miami have reportedly made an approach to sign Racing Club defender Juan Jose Caceres after missing out on Marcelo Weigandt.

The Herons are on a quest to add to the right-back position having traded DeAndre Yedlin to FC Cincinnati, with Boca Juniors star Weigandt initially viewed as the main target for Inter Miami.

However, the Argentine giants’ demands for the right-back have been seen as too expensive for the Florida franchise, who are now exploring other options despite Weigandt now being outcasted from Boca Juniors.

And according to journalist German Garcia Gorva, Inter Miami have made steps already to sign Caceres, though the defender has recently joined Argentina side Lanus on loan for the year.

Described by TyC Sports as a ‘warrior’ of a defender, Inter Miami might struggle to bring in the Paraguay international given his loan move to Lanus and his current contract situation at Racing.

With the Herons unable to match Boca Juniors’ demands for Weigandt, there’s a real chance that the MLS side could face a similar problem with Racing for Caceres.

Moreover, Lanus themselves might be eager to retain the young defender, with the Argentine side already rumored to have an agreement to sign Caceres in December.

There’s no such thing as a straightforward Inter Miami transfer saga, and this latest episode surrounding Weigandt and Caceres is a testament to such a statement.

The Herons find themselves in a position where they wouldn’t pursue a player who is ready to leave due to financial demands, only to now throw their hat into the ring for a talent who might be impossible to sign.

Indeed, Inter Miami need a right-back before the closure of the MLS transfer window, and biting the bullet for Weigandt might be the best way to go about this messy episode despite Caceres’ potential.
