Inter Miami have signed rising Paraguay international star Diego Gomez from Club Libertad Asuncion on a long-term deal.
The 20-year-old is joining on a four-year contract with a one-year optional extension, and follows Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi as new Miami players.
As per The Athletic, Gomez will take an international roster slot, and as he is under 22, he will also take one of the designated spots which allows younger players to be signed on more lucrative contracts.
Miami are currently bottom of the Eastern Conference, but these new arrivals, coupled with the appointment of Gerardo Martino as manager, could see them start to rise up the rankings in the MLS.
What will Gomez bring to Miami?
Gomez typically plays as a central midfielder and could slot in next to Busquets in the middle of the park. As a box-to-box option, he occasionally chips in with the occasional goal, whilst providing energy and aggression in the centre.
The young midfielder has already won two international caps, and could become a key player for his country. He will join an already fairly young midfield, but the presence of Busquets will add necessary experience to Miami’s roster.
Gomez has already expressed his excitement to play for the club, stating “I believe that we can compete and I will fight to help the Club achieve its goals.”
He has already made 51 appearances for Libertad, scoring six times, and has featured heavily in the Copa Libertadores. This could prove useful, as he may be relatively unfazed coming into a Miami team with high pressure, following the arrivals of big-name superstars amidst a terrible run of form.
Gomez may be in line to make his debut alongside Jordi Alba against Atlanta next week, whilst Messi and Busquets are expected to play some part against Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup this weekend.
