Reinforcements are here for Inter Miami.

On January 23rd, the Herons officially announced the signing of long-rumored target Nicolas Freire on loan.

Freire, 29, joins Miami after stints at Pumas and Greek side Olympiacos. The defender is a much-needed addition to Miami’s back line. The Herons have been looking for a stud center-back to partner youngsters Noah Allen and Tomas Aviles after the departure of Kamal Miller.

“Nicolás offers us a sturdy defensive presence who we know will work hard and help command the backline,” said club CSO and Sporting Director Chris Henderson in the team press release.

He’s been successful in several high-quality competitions throughout his career, and we’re excited to bring him onboard to help us compete for titles in 2024. We believe his experience will be an asset for us.”

Miami now has more options on its back line than two weeks ago.

According to Tata Martino’s starting lineups during preseason, the men in pink will keep playing a 3-5-2.

With Freire now in the squad, he’ll likely slot in the middle of Miami’s defensive three.

As pre-season continues, expect Miami to get sharper in the final third. Though some may worry that the lack of goals is a concern, according to Martino, the club is in line with their preseason plans.
