Pundit lauds Inter Miami decision to sign ‘unplayable’ Nicolas Freire

MLS analyst Devon Kerr has praised Inter Miami’s decision this winter to sign Argentine defender Nicolas Freire on loan.

The 29-year-old centre-back is the Heron’s most recent addition having added Luis Suarez and Julian Gressel to their roster this off-season.

With Kamal Miller being traded to the Portland Timbers, a massive void was left in the Inter Miami backline that needed replacing with an experienced, quality defender.

And speaking during Apple’s coverage of Inter Miami’s pre-season friendly against Hong Kong XI, pundit Kerr was full of praise for the Florida franchise in their decision to sign Freire.

Having played in Europe and in Mexico, the Pumas-owned defender ticks a lot of boxes for what Inter Miami were looking for in a Miller replacement, and Kerr had some high praise for the Argentine.

The MLS expert said: “With his pedigree, he can make that big a difference. I remember him vividly in the run to the CONCACAF Champions League final, and he was unplayable, he was that good.”

Inter Miami might need more than Nicolas Freire at the back

Pre-season has been an eye-opener for Inter Miami fans and pundits, with the glaring issue still being that Tata Martino’s side need quality at the back.

The Herons have leaked goals for funs in recent friendlies, with Inter Miami shipping six against Al-Nassr last week in what was an embarrassing result for the Florida franchise and MLS.

And whilst Freire might be a good addition, the Argentine simply might not be enough if Inter Miami are to really improve their defence for the better.

Indeed, signings will be difficult give the lack of salary space Inter Miami currently have, but something could be better than nothing for the Herons alongside Freire.
