Rumor: Inter Miami linked to Argentine defender

Silly season has begun for Inter Miami.

According to a report from Argentine media outlet 0221, Estudiantes right-back Leonardo Godoy is allegedly linked with a move to Inter Miami.

The report claims that the South Florida team has Godoy in its sights as a reinforcement for the 2024 season. In 23 games for the Argentine club this year, Godoy has racked up 6 G/A in all competitions.

Though the information appears to be a rumor for now, Miami looking for extra depth at the right-back spot is plausible.

In 2023, United States international DeAndre Yedlin was Miami’s first-choice right-back. The defender first signed with the team in early 2022, and has been a mainstay in Inter Miami’s defense ever since.

However, Yedlin is getting older.

Like many players who relied on speed, as they age, a drop in straight-line pace is noticeable. Though Yedlin remains rapid on the pitch, the 31 games he played for Inter Miami last year will start to take a toll on his body.

With the amount of matches Miami will play next year, it’s imperative that the club add depth to the right-back spot.

While Godoy may not be the right-back the team goes after, Inter Miami will need to freshen up its roster.

Next season, the Herons will be playing in various competitions, both international and domestic. Should they want to add to its trophy cabinet, adding depth to several positions is a must.

Miami Sporting Director Chris Henderson spoke about the front office’s intention to bring players in that will help the team achieve its goals: “We’re proud of building a team that was able to win the first title in Inter Miami history this year, and will continue to look to build on that to find further success moving forward. Now we will look ahead to 2024. We hope to come back even stronger next season, and be ready to compete for more.”

As the new year approaches, Miami will want to remain competitive. It remains to be seen if Godoy will join the team, but if the 28-year-old does, he’ll be a welcome addition to the side.
