How many goals Lionel Messi needs to break all the MLS records for Inter Miami

Lionel Messi has already made history with Inter Miami, helping lead the bottom side of the MLS to their first-ever trophy, and he will now target more success.

Tata Martino’s side lifted the Leagues Cup, with Messi scoring 10 goals in the cup run following his arrival this summer.

The Argentine, who is widely considered the greatest player of all time, will now target more records to break whilst he is at Miami, and will also attempt to help the side recover from their poor start of the season to climb off the bottom of the league table.

There are a few ambitious achievements he can target, but nothing can be ruled out when it comes to Messi, and it will be exciting to see how many MLS records he can smash.

MLS top scorer – all time

MLS has had some high-profile players in the past, and there are some big names Messi can overtake when it comes to becoming the league’s all-time top scorer.

Chris Wondolowski, who spent his entire career in MLS with San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo FC, is the current holder of the all-time top scorer record, with 174 goals in 422 games.

The likes of Landon Donovan and Bradley Wright-Phillips did not finish their careers too far behind, and there are 15 players who scored over 100 goals in the competition.

MLS top scorer – current players

Chicago Fire striker Kei Kamara is the current player with the most MLS goals, with 149 strikes to his name in 427 games over the years, having played for over 10 different clubs.

Messi’s Inter Miami teammate Josef Martinez is in second place, with 109 strikes from 164 matches.

MLS top scorer – this season

Nashville SC striker Hany Mukhtar is currently leading the scoring charts this season with 13 strikes from 24 games, and there are four players with 12 strikes just behind him.

Messi may well fancy his chances at catching the leading flock, with 13 games left this season, as if he continues his current rate of scoring more than a goal per game, he may not end up far off the top.

MLS fastest to 100 goals

Fellow Inter Miami star Martinez currently holds the record for the fastest player to 100 goals, having managed his in just 142 matches, beating Wright-Phillips’ previous record which was achieved in 159.

Messi will fancy his chances at beating that.

Inter Miami – top scorer

Messi’s 10 strikes already place him third in Inter Miami’s all-time top scorer list, only behind Leanardo Campana with 16 goals from 52, and Gonzalo Higuain, who scored 29 times in 70 games.

This is another record Messi may genuinely have a shot at breaking, whilst most other players might not consider it possible.
