Inter Miami could reinforce its defense with a center-back that’s on loan.
On October 25th, Miami released its end-of-season roster decisions. The press release detailed players whose contract options were declined, expired, or renewed for the following season.
One name on the list that’s in discussions to possibly return to the team is center-back Leandro Gonazlez-Pirez.
Currently on loan at River Plate, Gonazlez-Pirez played for Inter Miami from 2020 through the 2021 season. He was subsequently shipped off the roster in early 2022 and has been playing with Los Millonarios since.
In Miami, the Argentine was known for his tough tackling, hard-nosed style, which saw him on the receiving end of yellow cards. Additionally, Gonazlez-Pirez was adept at playing the ball from the back and would start Miami attacks if instructed by the manager.
Should the 31-year-old return to Miami, he’d reunite with manager Tata Martino, who he played under at Atlanta United from 2017 to 2019.
Inter Miami roster revamp

If the 2023’s failure to make the playoffs was any indication, Miami will need to revamp its back line.
Although the Herons have an explosive attack, it’s their center-back core that needs work. Speedy wingers often exposed the weaknesses in Inter Miami’s defense.
The potential integration of Gonazlez-Pirez back into the squad could solve the issue. The Argentine isn’t the fastest in sprint, but he has a quick first step that helps him recover well.
However, River could still exercise their purchase option on Gonazlez-Pirez, which would see him leave the team permanently.
In the end, whatever Inter Miami and River Plate decide, it’s clear that Miami requires defensive reinforcements.
Whether it’s Gonazlez-Pirez or another unknown name, expect Inter Miami Sporting Director Chris Henderson to bring in a solid center-back that will fix the recurring defensive issues.
