Youngster Santiago Morales would then win it for the Herons in the shootout, with Messi seen hugging Morales after his winning penalty.
Pre-season is ultimately a time of trial and preparation, but the win against Club America shouldn’t underestimated especially when it comes to Mascherano’s start to life as manager.
Javier Mascherano becomes first Inter Miami coach to win debut match
Having watched Inter Miami lift the Supporters’ Shield in 2024, Mascherano will recognize the need for a quick start in Vice City.
With that being said, his start could not have gone much better, picking up a win in his debut match in charge – something no past Miami head coach has managed before.
Whether it be Tata Martino or Phil Neville, no former Herons manager has managed to pick the W in their first game – suggesting Miami may be in for a bright start under the former Barcelona man.
Mascherano will be hoping for more despite debut win
The Argentine will no doubt be happy with a win in his first game, but he will also recognize the improvements moving forward.
Inter Miami were largely outplayed by the Mexican Giants only managing 36% possession – something Miami players are not used to.
Club America also dominated when it came to the attacking stats as well racking up double the amount of shots and big chances.
