Inter Miami must look to protect Lionel Messi at all costs, especially during pre-season games.
So, Javier Mascherano’s heart must have been in his mouth when his star was targeted by a rough tackle during Inter Miami’s recent 3-1 win over San Miguelito.
Mascherano cast doubt on Messi’s playing time during the pre-season and he would have perhaps wished he hadn’t played him in their latest win which saw Tadeo Allende score his first goal for the Herons.
Messi did not score in the game but he was certainly involved in one of the biggest flash points.
Mascherano ‘concerned’ following Messi treatment
Most opponents that face Messi are more than happy to share the field with him, San Miguelito’s Aymar Cundumi had different feelings though.
His late challenge on Messi earned him a red card, something that is very rare in pre-season games, and the tackle certainly saw tempers flare as Inter Miami teammates went to defend their superstar.
Mascherano, who was looking on from the sideline, revealed how he was more than shocked by the challenge.
He said: “More than surprised I was concerned … It’s unfortunate because if there’s something wonderful for people, it’s to watch Leo play.”
Messi’s minutes for the remaining pre-season games are now in doubt, whether this is to do with the challenge or more of a precaution remains to be seen.
Mascherano prepared for Olimpia friendly
It’s been a dream start for Mascherano as manager of Inter Miami with his team winning all three of their pre-season games.
While wins over Club America and Universitario required penalties the 3-1 win over San Miguelito was much more convincing.
Inter Miami now face Paraguayan side Olimpia in their next game and Mascherano has warned that they will be a ‘tough’ opponent.
He said: “I follow Olimpia because of Troglio [Olimpia’s coach], we Argentines like to follow other Argentine coaches. They are a good team and have achieved a lot recently. They will be a tough and high-level opponent for us.”
Following their Olimpia test they will take on rivals Orlando City FC before the MLS season begins to get into full swing.
