Lionel Messi has been accused of being ‘classless’ after winning his historic eighth Ballon d’Or by former Paris Saint Germain winger Jérôme Rothen.

In an interview with French outlet RMC Sport, Rothen was critical of the World Cup winner when it comes to his behavior on the field: “When it comes to their [Argentina’s] behaviour, they are the first to attack others. Starting with the star of this team, Leo Messi.”

“Now that he is a world champion and has had a good rest ahead of the World Cup since two years ago at PSG. He used to have the image of a sweet guy, but now he has changed because his true personality is coming out and he got caught.”

This rant comes days after Messi and Argentina got into a spat with Brazilian winger Rodrygo during their World Cup qualifying match on November 21st.

Throughout his career, Messi has earned a reputation for being calm on the field.

Since winning the World Cup however, the Argentine has taken a relaxed approach to life, telling Mundo Deportivo that the pressure has lifted off his shoulders: “We enjoyed that moment, but we couldn’t believe we’d won, but it’s also the feeling that it’s over, I did it, I won everything in my career with the national team, with Barcelona, it was the perfect closure to my career.”

This relaxed attitude from Messi has shown up on the pitch from time to time, including being bold enough to defend his teammates when they get disrespected.

Despite the comments made by Rothen, every teammate Messi has had has spoken about the Argentinian’s kindness.

Miami midfielder Edison Azcona can attest to this, saying that the 36-year-old has helped him improve as a player: “He gave me soccer advice when I have spoken to him. When I go to receive a ball, he suggests an option to control it and choose a better alternative over another.”

Messi has accomplished everything there is to win in world football, it’s only natural that he’ll feel entitled to respect.

Though Rothen may have other ideas, the Argentine is generally well-liked and gets along well with his teammates.
