Inter Miami could add an MLS-Cup-winning wing-back to its ranks.

According to Tom Bogert of The Athletic, Miami is the current favorite to land German-American defender Julian Gressel in free agency.

Gressel is a highly decorated MLS full-back with several years of experience. During his time in Major League Soccer, the 29-year-old has managed to win two MLS Cups with two separate teams. First in 2018 with Atlanta United, and the second just a week ago with the Columbus Crew.

The former DC United player is also well acquainted with Miami manager Tata Martino, whom he played under from 2017 to 2019 at Atlanta United.

In a previous opinion article, Inter Miami News suggested that the defender should be on Inter Miami’s radar during the winter window.

With Martino suggesting that the Herons could switch to a three-at-the-back system, the MLS Cup winner would be a solid fit, given his skill set on the ball.

Should Miami close the deal on Gressel, they’ll add a talented, MLS-quality wing-back to its squad.

If Gressel joins the team, right-back DeAndre Yedlin will have competition.

Although a competitive spirit within the squad isn’t a bad thing, many supporters may worry about fan-favorite Yedlin dropping out of favor.

Fortunately, Miami will be playing in multiple tournaments in 2024 where Gressel and Yedlin will rotate if fatigue becomes an issue. Additionally, Martino may deploy several formations over the year. Both Yedlin and Gressel excel in different tactical setups.

Miami is in revamp mode.

2023 ended on a negative note for the Herons after failing to make the playoffs. The South Florida side will look to avoid that same fate as 2024 rolls around.

Will Gressel be the key player they need in defense? It remains to be seen. But, his talent and experience will be a big boost to Miami’s roster.
