Lionel Messi is the greatest football player of all time, but there’s still one award that eludes him in Major League Soccer.
The MLS Landon Donovan MVP award is the most coveted individual prize in the league.
This year, Argentinian maestro Luciano Acosta from FC Cincinnati received the accolade. Next season, however, the award will be up for grabs.
Many fans and pundits believe that Messi will be in contention for the honor in 2024. Considering his form this year, it’s highly likely.
Messi led the men in pink to the Leagues Cup title, Miami’s first trophy in club history, ending the tournament with 10 goals and one assist. Additionally, the former Paris Saint Germain midfielder skyrocketed the South Florida club into the upper echelon of world football.
Although the World Cup winner played less than 500 league minutes this year, his impact on the field for Inter Miami was felt.
With a full off-season of rest, and the potential of Luis Suárez joining the club, the 36-year-old is in prime position to win the award in 2024.
Messi for MVP?

Messi will, undoubtedly, be in contention to win next year’s MVP.
In every league he’s played in, the Argentine has managed to win both individual and team awards.
2024 will give Messi another opportunity to win more silverware.
Inter Miami wants to revamp its squad.
Sporting Director Chris Henderson stated in his end-of-year conference that the club intended to bring quality players to the team this winter: “Without tipping what we’re going to do in trades, I do feel that we need to have competition in every spot.”
Ultimately, Messi will have the supporting cast around him to help him win MVP. Whether that comes to fruition remains to be seen. But, if Miami’s off-season plans indicate anything, the Argentine will certainly have a solid chance.
