According to Fabrizio Romano, Luis Suárez will soon be an Inter Miami player.

The Italian journalist stated in an X post that the Uruguayan is finalizing details before heading off to South Florida: “Luis Suárez said goodbye to Gremio fans… and he’s now set to fix the final details of his contract in order to become new Inter Miami player. Deal will be valid for one year, also considering an option for further season.”

This news comes as no surprise.

For months, Inter Miami has been after the services of Suárez, including a half-hearted transfer swoop in the summer.

It appears that the Herons will finally get the striker they’ve been after. But, despite the thrill that may come with signing the former Barcelona forward, some risks remain.

Inter Miami and concerns about Suarez’s knees?

There are concerns about Suárez’s health.

In a conversation with Uruguayan radio station Sport 890, the 36-year-old spoke about his chronic knee pain: “The days before each game I take three pills and hours before playing I get an injection. If not, I can’t play. Hence the limp.”

Suárez continued: “The truth is that the first steps in the morning are very painful. Anyone who sees me thinks that it is impossible for me to play a game. My son asks me to play with him and I can’t.”

This could be an issue for Inter Miami in 2024.

If the Uruguayan’s knees are as bad as he says they are, then the Herons won’t be able to rely on him to start every match next season.

Fortunately, with young forward Leonardo Campana in the squad’s ranks, Suárez will be able to adequately rest, and then play in matches when he’s capable of fully contributing, essentially rotating with the Ecuadorian.

On the other hand, if Inter Miami and its medical staff can provide sufficient physical recuperation after each match Suárez plays, then the Herons should be able to get the best out of the Uruguayan.

It’s evident that the 36-year-old still has something to give.

His 24 goals in all competitions for Gremio speaks for itself. The only question will be, is the forward able to keep that up over a full calendar year in Major League Soccer?

UPDATE: The Miami Herald has confirmed that Suárez will be signing a one-year deal. The official announcement should be made after Gremio’s last game of the season on December 6th.
