Inter Miami have reportedly reached a loan agreement with one of the biggest clubs in South America to sign a Paraguay international.

The Herons have been quiet in the summer transfer window, with current rumors focusing on Inter Miami players leaving for Europe, namely Diego Gomez, who has been linked with Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham.

With a central defender the top priority for Inter Miami this summer, it’s been no surprise that the Herons have been linked with the likes of Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos, both of whom are currently free agents.

However, it appears that Inter Miami have finally found a player to fill this void via South America.

Inter Miami agree to sign River Plate defender David Martinez on loan

According to journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, Inter Miami have struck an agreement with River Plate to sign center-back David Martinez on loan, with the Herons having an option to make the deal permanent in 2025.

Merlo wrote: “Hector David Martinez has reached an agreement to join Inter Miami. There is already an agreement with River for the transfer for one year loan with a purchase option. In the next few days, he will travel to have a medical check-up. If everything goes well, he will sign.”

An 11-time Paraguay international, Martinez has played a bit-part role for River Plate this season, with the 26-year-old defender making just five appearances in all competitions this year, only playing 182 minutes.

With Inter Miami in desperate need of a defender, Martinez will fill the void nicely for the Herons, with the Florida franchise also adding to their Paraguayan contingent with Gomez and Matias Rojas already on their books.

Martinez could be the Herons’ defensive saviour this year

With Nicolas Freire out for the year, Inter Miami knew their first port of call this summer was to sign a defender to replace the Argentine center-back, and the Herons have done just that in Martinez.

Experienced at the highest level in South America and a regular international with Paraguay, Martinez ticks a lot of boxes for Inter Miami in their quest to sign a defender this summer.

And with an agreement already wrapped up with River Plate, the signing could be made official very soon, with Inter Miami in need of a new defender as soon as possible.
