David Beckham revealed why he brought Lionel Messi to Inter Miami.
The former England international told French newspaper AFP via MARCA, that he brought the 36-year-old to the club to inspire the next generation of young players: “But one of the reasons why we bought him was to also inspire the next generation of soccer players in America, to want to be soccer players. So bringing him does that and it’s an important thing for us.”
The Argentine announced his intentions to play in Major League Soccer on June 8th and subsequently signed with Miami on July 15th.
Since then, the World Cup winner has pushed the South Florida club into the upper echelon of world football. Alongside Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, Messi also led Inter Miami to its first trophy in club history this summer with a Leagues Cup victory.
According to Beckham, the investment has been worth it: “Because someone like that changes the game. You know, someone like that inspires another generation of soccer players. And that’s why we wanted to bring Leo to the team.”
Inter Miami and Messi’s plans for 2024

Inter Miami ended 2023 on a low note, failing to make the post-season after winning its first piece of silverware in the summer.
Despite the disappointing end to the year, Messi enjoyed a fruitful 2023 for the Herons, notching 14 G/A in all competitions.
As Miami pivots to 2024, Messi will play a crucial role in the team’s future success.
The ex-Barcelona talisman has already admitted that he’s hungry to win more trophies next season with Inter Miami.
Additionally, head coach Tata Martino has spoken about a potential tactical switch to accommodate Messi’s attacking talent.
Ultimately, 2024 is a season where the Herons will look to challenge for MLS Cup. As Beckham stated in his interview, he not only brought Messi to the club to grow the brand, but to win more silverware.
