Inter Miami targeting experienced Argentinian international – he could be the answer to their defensive problems

While the doors have been working overtime this offseason at the Chase Stadium the stars have only been heading in one direction… out.

Despite being linked with a whole host of names including Kevin De Bruyne, new manager Javier Mascherano is yet to make his first signing.

The squad is getting ever thinner following the recent departures of some high-profile names including Diego Gomez and the record-breaking Leo Campana who has joined the New England Revolution.

The club also said goodbye to goalkeeper CJ dos Santos who was picked up by San Diego FC in the MLS Expansion Draft.

Following Dos Santos’ departure, the club has been left with limited goalkeeper options with only Drake Callender a real contender, it’s clear that Mascherano needs reinforcements between the sticks.

Experienced shot-stopper Guzman could be the answer

While Inter Miami has been linked with a whole host of attacking talent it’s the defense that looks a little light on the ground.

The departure of the promising Dos Santos came as somewhat of a shock as he had been seen putting in some impressive performances for Inter Miami II.

However, it now appears that Mascherano has become aware of the lack of goalkeeping depth and is eyeing a move for Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman, according to El Crack Deportivo.

Guzman is a former Argentinian international who has six caps for his country, but he is most well known for his time in Mexican football. He has amassed 393 caps for Tigres since 2014.

The experienced shot-stopper is out of contract with his club in June 2025 meaning a deal could likely be reached.

He certainly doesn’t come without a touch of controversy though as the player was banned for 11 games and fined by the Mexican FA last season for pointing a laser at his opponents it was reported.

Inter Miami need urgent goalkeeper cover

Currently, the club only have two goalkeepers on their roster Drake Callender and veteran Oscar Ustari, who looks unlikely to remain with the side.

Even Callender himself has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks.

While the Herons appear interested in Lanus goalkeeper Nahuel Losada a deal has yet to be agreed by the club, with the Argentinian side unsurprisingly reluctant to lose one of their stars.

It is no secret that the lack of clean sheets last season and the amount of goals the side were conceding hurt Inter Miami in their playoff defeat to Atlanta.

The goalkeeper situation needs to be addressed sharply, especially with the new season just a few months away.
